The Biggest Lip Mistake Kylie Jenner Ever Made (and What She Learned From It)

Now this is what we call major selling power! Kylie Jenner ruled Cyber Monday with her Kylie Lip Kit selling out online almost as soon as it was available for purchase (we called it!). The lip kit—currently only available in three luxe matte shades—is the brain child of Kylie's and completely self-produced by her as well (yep, that's her lips on the packaging!). We were actually one of the lucky few who got to spend the morning with Kylie (where she was joined by mom, Kris, and dad, Caitlyn, throughout the day at boutique Dash) chatting with her about application techniques (yes, there's a trick to doing it so perfectly), color inspiration, and the biggest lip mistake she's ever made. Lipstick: What was the most exciting thing about designing your own beauty products? And what was the most frustrating part?

Kylie Jenner: The most exciting [moment] is when people are trying it on and wearing it in photos. The most challenging part was picking the right shade and trusting myself. These are shades that I'm kind of popular for...but waiting for it to be made is frustrating. It takes like two months for the product, box, and packaging to be made, so if you think of a new color, you have to wait [a while]!

Brown lipstick is now your signature, but what got you into it in the first place?

It's just cool. I started using brown eyeliner on my lips, and I thought, "I'm obsessed with this, I need to make a lipstick!"

We won't ask you to choose your favorite shade, but is there one lipstick you find yourself gravitating to most?

I think Candy K, which I'm wearing right now. It's kind of just like the perfect, pinkish, everyday [lipstick].

How would you do the rest of your makeup to complement that lip color?

Candy K is a light, everyday [look], so I wouldn't wear that much heavy eye makeup. I would do a fresh look with Candy. For Dolce K, I would do a little more moody, nighttime look for me because it makes the whole look a bit darker. It's kind of like Candy, but it's more brown than it is pink. For True Brown, it's definitely a light makeup look because the brown is darker, but I'd [wear] it in the day and the night. You have to be in the mood for it.

What's the best trick you've learned for applying liquid lipstick?

A trick is, if you're not good at lines and you mess up at all, you can take a little brush of concealer and clean it up a little. And always have a ChapsStick in your purse because if you wear it for a long time, it can get a bit dry—like matte [often] does, so have a ChapStick on deck.

Who are your lip icons?

My sisters have had full lips, so [they are].

What's the biggest mistake you've made when it comes to your lips? How have you learned from it?

Probably just getting your lips done, like injections. You can kind of get addicted and go overboard with it, and I feel like I did that maybe a year ago. I feel like I learned from my mistakes and can go, "Wait, I don't need to have huge lips, I just want them a little more plumped." I kind of got carried away for a second, but you live and you learn. I think that's how it is with everything. I feel like you have to hear other people's opinions, so if they say, "You should really tone it down," I'm like, "Maybe I should listen to you!" [Laughs]

Are you planning to cut back on getting lip injections?

I'm really happy with my lips a little plump. I haven't gone in [for injections] in a while. Maybe it's been a year or something. And it just keeps disintegrating. People think in pictures that I have a habit of pursing out my lips and that I have huge lips, but I think they're pretty normal.

Lastly, why was it so important for you to create this lip kit?

Mainly because I'm so obsessed with lipstick and I can't go out of the house without it! But also, because every time I would release what lip liner or color I was using, it would sell out immediately at any store, so I wanted to create my own.
