Lucy Hale is practically the queen of the dramatic hair change—remember when she changed her hair from a long blond ombré to pumpkin spice hair to short and dark in just over a month last year? So when Hale posted an Instagram of herself on Friday with what looked like a choppy, edgy pixie cut, we weren't totally shocked—after all, Hale has had her hair short lately, and this could very well be the latest magic from her stylist, Kristin Ess. But what did surprise us was what Hale wrote below her post. Fair warning: Twist ahead.

Hale captioned the photo of her new look with a revealing caption: "When @kristin_ess knows how to fake an even shorter haircut on you and now you want to actually do it 🤔 one day ..."

Yep, the pixie Ess gave Hale is actually fake—and from the sounds of Hale's caption, it might just be a trial run for a new look for her in the future. It's not super surprising she might want to go all in with the chop considering how great it looks on her, especially with the way it shows off her cartilage piercings, her bold brows, and her dark-red lip.

If anyone could do it, Ess can. The celebrity stylist is a pro when it comes to taking celebrities out of their comfort zones: She took Lauren Conrad platinum, went rose gold with Ashley Tisdale, and gave Jenna Dewan Tatum bangs.

From the looks of Hale's styling, Ess used a few strategically placed bobby pins, some dramatic part placement, and a whole lot of texturizing product to get this look. We reached out to her for more details on nailing the faux pixie, and we'll update you when those roll in. But for now, we'll be practicing our faux bob skills with these easy steps.
