On January 8, 2001, Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake (probably unknowingly) made fashion history when they stepped onto the red carpet at the American Music Awards wearing…well, you know of the coordinated denim-on-denim ensembles at this point. After all, in the 16 years since (!), these get-ups have been cited as some of the most memorable, instantly iconic celebrity style moments of all time. Its anniversary has been celebrated. Its even be rehashed on the red carpet since. And, sure, one half of the duo may have walked back on it, but this sartorial choice still feels relevant in 2017. Case in point: Belgian brand Filles a Papa's fall collection, which boasts a tribute to 2001 Britney and Justin as part of its "Never Forget" T-shirt series.
The European label, which is the brainchild of sister design duo Sarah and Carol Piron, just released its fall 2017 pieces online. Among them are two graphic T-shirts and sweatshirts that are part of a nostalgic "Never Forget" capsule: One features a "Wall of Fame" of deceased music icons, and the other bears a digital print of Spears and Timberlake, clad in their best denim. The price of sweet, sweet nostalgia? $152.47.
The Piron siblings tell Glamour they were teens back in 2001, when Britney and Justin set new Canadian tuxedo standards for us all. "We enjoy playing with moments that are instantly memorable," they say, in a joint statement. "Pure nostalgia." Originally, the "Never Forget" concept was limited to music legends, honoring those who had recently passed (David Bowie, George Michael, Prince, and Michael Jackson), they say. Eventually, the Filles a Papa designers decided to expand it in a slightly more "absurd" direction. "We love creating prints from nostalgic moments of our past—it’s an inspiration to us," the Pirons add.
Fans of the brand include Céline Dion, Hailey Baldwin, and Marion Cotillard. So we wouldn't be surprised if we spotted celebrities getting meta with this Britney and Justin moment very soon.
As we've already established, the ’00s revival is here, and it's not going anywhere. So strap in—and, at the very least, don't totally rule out the light-wash denim just yet.
