Rachel Bilson just got very personal on her podcast.

On the October 23 episode of Broad Ideas, which honored Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, Bilson shared her own experience with pregnancy loss, revealing that she’s had multiple miscarriages. “It’s one of the biggest things I talk about with pregnancy and having babies,” Bilson said. “I’ve had miscarriages so I’ve had losses.” She added, “Never carried. They were early on.”

Bilson gave birth to her daughter Briar Rose, who she shares with ex-fiancé Hayden Christensen, in 2014. “You just feel like—you really are living a life with a purpose,” Bilson told SheKnows in a 2019 interview when asked about her daughter. “Setting an example for her is the most important. So, in that, it’s like every move you make you know is being watched, so you have to consider things a little more carefully.”

But while Rachel Bilson has spoken publicly about motherhood and co-parenting before, this is the first time she’s opened up about her own pregnancy loss. On the podcast, Bilson said experiencing loss taught her to “roll with the punches” when it came to her birth plan. “With birth, I even remember going into it saying, ‘I’m open to whatever.’” She continued, “What plans can you make when it’s really not up to you?”
